You will lose a bit of weight with a smaller frame but you'll add some back with a longer stem and seatpost.

I can just about contact the ground with my tippy-tiptoes if I stretch and one toe if I slip partially off the saddle sideways. Correct seat height is far more important than being able to touch the ground.

As the title says I have a busted rib, I did it 2 weeks ago after coming off my bike hitting the towpath and then ending up fully submerged with my bike in the canal. I'm still in frequent pain and taking pain killers, and still off work until next Friday at least.

Strap it down with webbing luggage straps over the fork crown, or over the bars but not the frame, and it will track behind you like a trailer.

A Brompton would be a little less suitable than a bike with larger wheels but with the right choice of tyres and tyre pressure one can easily handle canal paths.

For 50 miles, depending on a whole bunch of factors (mass, speed, aerodynamics), you may be burning through 1000 to 2000 calories. Possibly a days worth of food.
