YouTube’s so-called ‘Premium Lite’ tier will reportedly allow you to skip ads on videos and podcasts, but not music. YouTube on TV’s popularity shows that the mobile app would be better off emulating Netflix on mobile. Podcasts have well and truly gone mainstream, and Netflix wants to host them.

For a long time I've resisted taking the plunge into yet another subscription with YouTube Premium for $13.99 a month, enduring 30-second ads (or even longer) when I lazily open the app on one of my consoles. Well, now there's a lower price point to tempt me, with a pilot YouTube Premium Lite tier rolling out across the US for $7.99 a month.

On Wednesday, YouTube announced that its cheaper Premium Lite plan is now available in the US for $7.99 per month. The new plan allows users to watch “most” videos on YouTube without ads, including videos related to gaming, fashion, beauty, news, and more. Ads will continue to appear on music content, Shorts, and while searching and browsing.
