There are certain areas like: Grand Lake or Bear Lake that you will need to go online and pay for a Timed Pass. The others you can peruse at your leisure. Going in October, you should be good with the crowds, as we went in June of this year and it wasn't to bad.
If I enter through Grand Lake before 9 am, do I need a timed permit pass? There does not seem to be any available for reservations. I know we can wait until the night before to obtain one, but we have a tour to make at 4 pm in Estes Park.

Very soon, those timed entry requirements go away, and I can't imagine that issue was not raised when you got the hiking shuttle reservation. I do know that group tours of the park do not require an individual timed reservation. The timed entry is handled by the tour vendor.
